LONG WEEKEND PLANS

August 28, 2013

It's Wednesday, friends, which means we are halfway there to a glorious three day weekend.

Are you doing anything special for the Labor Day holiday? Sending out the summer with a bang?

I'm planning on taking a road trip in a convertible down Highway 1 to LA with this gal and two other ladies. We've all agreed that we'll have no set agenda...just stop where we see something gorgeous, and enjoy the journey.

After months of busy busy busy, plan plan plan, my soul needs a trip like this.

Of course, that doesn't mean I haven't been thinking about the perfect things to wear and pack.

When sitting in a car for eight plus hours, comfort is key, so I'm planning on keeping it casual but pulled together with a basic tank and stretchy pants.

Sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and lip balm to keep the sun at bay, because let's face it...I just hit 30 and there will be zero wrinkles allowed from this point further.

I'm throwing in a Turkish towel like this one - it makes a perfect beach towel, picnic blanket, or gives extra warmth should it get windy along the drive.

No road trip is complete without snacks...I try to bring along something a little more healthy than the average gas station fare. And while I can't read in the car without feeling a little woozy (hi, I'm still a child) I'm bringing along my Kindle for a little beach reading.

And don't you dare try to bring a giant suitcase on a road trip. Keep it easy in the most perfect weekender bag I've found.

Have you been on a road trip before? What are your essentials?

/ ONE / Mossimo Racerback Tank / TWO / Stella McCartney Aviator Sunglasses / THREE / J.Crew Panama Hat / FOUR / KIND Bars / FIVE / Kindle Paperwhite / SIX / Furbish Studio Turkish Towel / SEVEN / Supergoop Antioxidant Infused Sunscreen + EOS Lip Balm / EIGHT / Gap 1969 Camo Skinny Jeans / NINE / Everlane Reverse Denim Weekender

  1. I'm the same about reading in the car! Yay for being 5 years old!

I still always bring along my iPod on road trips. We like Virginia backroads where there sometimes isn't any radio at all (except maybe Christian preachers and Rush Limbaugh, neither of which are really our speed).

  2. Tunes! And a pillow. We stocked our cooler with snacks and drinks when we drove down from Seattle - animal crackers seemed to be the favorite snack!

  3. I LOOOOOOVE that Everlane bag! Been drooling over it since I saw it on my friend's IG.

  4. Those jeans are so cute but they are sold out of most sizes. I'm going to keep my eye out for them. I love your outfits you put together. Share pics of your trip and have fun chica!

  5. You might try these...very similar look & feel! http://bit.ly/16RGQj3

Also, I've noticed that Gap seems to be restocking theirs every few days. If you really have your heart set on them, keep checking the site!

  7. Pillow! Good call. And we've definitely got the Spotify playlists covered!

  8. Hah, I'm so thankful I'm not the only one who gets carsick. Tennessee backroads are actually what used to make me so sick as a kid when reading, so I'm familiar with that area.

An iPod is a great idea though, I depend on Spotify so much, but some areas of Highway 1 have no cell signal.

  9. Just a heads up - my size came back in stock about 10 minutes ago! Bought them, and they're gone again! So keep checking :)

  10. I'm familiar! My parents live in Morro Bay and I know if I call them when they're in the car, the signal will drop at least once.

  17. For those who would like a large bag as your "personal item" but can't afford the pricetag on that snazzy leather Nest diaper bag, a much more affordable bag is the Versa diaper bag by Skip Hop. It's very durable, roomy, & stylish, & it won't put such a big dent in your pockets! Here is the link to product on the official Skip Hop website:

Note: I found the item for EVEN LESS on amazon.com:

  18. I am also a sweaty beast who stinks up shirts after one wear. The key for me is shirts that don't actually touch my pits! Dolman tops/sweaters, tanks with wide armholes etc. I find I can wear up to 3-4 times. Alternatively, pack several super thin undershirts in a moisture-wicking fabric and wear those under your tops. You can wash them in the sink, hang them up & they dry out really fast.

  19. I decant them into small Nalgene containers from The Container Store. The largest size (right under 3oz) is more than enough for two weeks, for me. If you only use the normal amount (quarter size drop) you can come home with half a bottle.

  21. wow, I'm impressed. Our overseas adventure starts in January and will end mid April. We will be heading into an English winter [from a Kiwi summer] and are planning lots of outdoors activity to break up the study time at one of the colleges in Cambridge. Do you have any other suggestions for surviving the cold?

  22. This post was so helpful! Those packing cubes worked like a charm.. Me and the bf are going to tokyo in december.. never been on vacay during winter and ur post helped me plan accordingly. I will never again have checked baggage on any future flights domestic or international thanks to you!!

  23. I just found your post and it's genius! I always a couple hours before my flight but I think I should start packing earlier. I was just curious, where are your rain boots from? Thank you!

  24. Very helpful! My partner & I are doing carry-on for 20 days in Europe! Check in comes with our tickets but we don't want to have waste hours and lug around things we never use. Still trying to work out what tops to take but the rest is all packed :)

  25. england isnt gonna be all that cold that time of year. compared to new zealand, maybe, but nothing like anywhere else in the world that gets actually cold winters. You're better off planning for rain- if you want to be outside take an insulated raincoat and waterproof boots.

  26. This just saved my life. I'm flying to Ireland tomorrow and had no idea how to pack, until now!

  27. Impressive, but I hardly think that is all packed in a "carry-on" bag.

  28. next time I go away I will try this so this is being saved to my favourites. One other hint is about folding your clothes and using more spaces. I have learnt and done it by rolling your individual clothing. Especially T/shirts and pants is a great way to add to your luggage

  29. where did you get your knitted bag for toiletries? it looks great!

  30. I absolutely love your blog. This post and the posts about packing for a two week trip with just a carry on are fantastic. I feel so much more organized and put together with these tips!
