I'm always inspired by people that take their expertise in one area and translate it in to several different careers. In the case of London based Rose Uniacke, she is a furniture restorer, a highly respected antiques dealer, and an interior designer. You know how your heart gets all fluttery when you run across a website that just...speaks to you? The one that has you pinning every single image and saving to your inspiration file?

There's no shortage of eye candy on Rose Uniacke's site. You'll find interiors with an eclectic mix of antiques and effortless appeal. This London home particularly caught my eye.  Check out the rest of the images and Friday links at the bottom. Happy weekend!

I've decided to expand the Friday featured space in to not one, but multiple images of the space that's caught my eye this week. Partly because I have trouble choosing just one image in what is often a well designed home from top to bottom, and partly because I hate finding a single image of a space and not being able to locate images of the rest of the home. What do you think? Would you enjoy seeing more images of these spaces each week? Check out the rest of the images and Friday links at the bottom. Happy weekend!

This week's favorite space is The Barcode House, a project by David Jameson Architect, located in Washington DC. I have a thing for city row homes and I love the use of glass mixed with brick and steel in this space.

I was honored to be spotlighted in this post and this post. Thank you Kate and Thea!

YOU ARE HERE

Whoa. How incredible are these handmade typography papercut pieces by Crafterall on Etsy? Marnie Karger is the artist behind these gorgeous works of art. She individually cuts each layer by hand in variegated colors, then assembles them into what you see here. I love that from first glance, they seem almost like an abstract painting, and then as you delve further in to the details, you realize what you're looking at is far more intricate.

AROUND HERE: OUR BATHROOM

May 16, 2012

When we moved to San Francisco nearly a year ago, we were so focused on just getting everything moved here from Atlanta, put away, and focused on our new life that we didn't do a ton of decorating. Now that I know we plan to stay in this apartment for a while, I'm going room by room and swapping things out, adding a bit of style to each space.

While our apartment is not old by San Francisco standards - we're 1950s versus many apartments built in the 20s - our bathroom is in need of a little TLC. Since we aren't allowed to paint, that forces me to focus on the actual pieces that go in to the space...both a blessing and a curse.

In the bathroom, my number one design tip is to treat the bathroom like you would any other room. It has to be functional, yes, but functional can also be beautiful. Shopping in the bathroom aisles won't necessarily get you there. When I looked for pieces for our bathroom, I looked at dining ware, living room rugs, and office supplies.

I started with this photograph from Vogue as a jumping off point. I wanted the small space to feel serene and the divers look peaceful and timeless. I decided to hide our glass shower doors that have seen better days with a shower curtain. You may have read that hanging your curtains high above your windows will make your room appear larger. This translates to the bathroom as well - but most shower curtains are sold at a 72" length. That's why I love these extra long shower curtains at an 84" length from Restoration Hardware. Hanging it higher than normal solves the ugly door problem and makes the ceilings look higher.

Most bath mats are really poorly designed but these jute rugs from West Elm come in a 2' x 3' size that's perfect in front of a tub or vanity. Or in the case of our super small bathroom, one rug serves both. These rugs still feel soft underfoot, clean up easily, and are more durable than their towel like counterparts. Better still, they don't get that matted look that normal bath mats get from moisture.

I finished off the vanity by gathering accessories that pull in our favorite colors while remaining functional. The large recycled glass jug can be used as a vase and the votive holder is perfect for relaxing with candles and a hot bath. The carafe can store mouthwash or bath salts and this tumbler is perfect for storing makeup brushes. I like the idea of putting photos in a bathroom and this frame can withstand the elements. This soap dish is perfect for by the sink or for holding jewelry.

If you're interested in following my inspiration for different rooms of our home, I keep an inspiration board here. You can see products I love, rooms that inspire me, and what we've got.

If I had to pick one designer to align my personal style with, I would have to say Nate Berkus. I feel like he always knocks it out of the park with that collected eclectic feel that never feels too designer, but always feels comfortable. I'm smitten over that tufted sofa paired with the leather chairs. There's a great article about the makeover of this home office on House Beautiful's site. Now if only my office could look like this one. Who am I kidding? If only I had a whole room for an office!

If you had to pick one designer or word to describe your personal style, who or what would it be?

After a brutal lightning storm last night, it's all sunshine and blue skies in San Francisco. I've been battling the bug that's going around but it looks like I've taken a turn for better, along with the weather! I'm thinking it will still be a weekend of low key relaxing. Happy Weekend! It's Friday and I'm looking forward to some time outside - it's been rainy the last two weekends in San Francisco, but sun is in the forecast and the farmer's market at the Ferry Building is on my agenda!

Speaking of the Ferry Building, Mariposa Baking Company just opened their permanent stall there with even more gluten free goodness than before.

Blog Brunch is this weekend - right from your home desk! I think I'll make some gluten free pancakes and join in for the first time, thanks Kate for introducing me to it.

These new prints from Jess LC are sure to keep you motivated. Which one would you choose? I'm leaning towards this one.

Enjoy your weekend! What are your plans?

FEELING FAMOUS

April 2, 2012

Do you read House & Home? It's one of my favorite shelter publications. Since it's a Canadian magazine, it's not as easy to get my hands on these days, but they have a wonderful iPad version that you can easily subscribe to and read. I think their iPad version is top-notch, which I shared with them on a recent item they posted on their Pinterest board. And what do you know, I sat down to read the latest April issue this weekend and spotted this:
What a delight to see a sincere compliment I gave them turned in to a quote in their magazine! I had no idea. Thank you, House & Home! You made my lazy, magazine reading filled, coffee slurping Sunday.

The April issue is full of incredibly juicy stuff, like this:

I highly recommend picking up this issue on the newsstand or downloading it via their iPad app. While I miss the feel of thumbing through glossy shelter magazines, I read the iPad versions more frequently and can easily snap screenshots to save to my inspiration files - no more paper clutter, hooray! Are you reading more magazines on your iPad these days, or do you spend your money at the newsstand?

GOING MAD

March 27, 2012

Do you love Mad Men as much as I do? I can't decide if the interiors or the fashion are my favorite part. The season premier on Sunday night was not as eventful as I hoped, after such a long absence, but it did give us a new set to look at - Jane & Don's apartment in the city. It was gorgeous! You can copycat their style with my picks. How rad is this vintage Lucky Strike waste can from one of my go-to vintage shops, High Street Market?

WELCOME HOME

March 7, 2012

What does a front door say about a home? I believe the front door sets the tone for what's behind it, and I love how one material - stone, can look so different on these three homes. Do you prefer a traditional door with timeless columns? Something a bit more aged and worn for a weathered, "been here for years" feel? Or does your preference lean modern, with sleek lines and smooth materials?

Don't you just love this bedroom? It toes the line between masculine and feminine, with tailored details in the upholstered headboard and bench, and a feminine touch with the pillow shams. The room feels light and airy, but still grounded with the contrast of the rug, the darker artwork on the pale walls, and dark furniture.

Neon is having a moment, isn't it? I just love the infusion of a little brightness into everyday life. Whether it's your closet or home, these happy tones should put a spring in your step. SNAP SNAP SNAP

February 2, 2012

Do you use Instagram? I've used it, didn't love the limited options, but now that I realized I can take photos with my beloved Camera+ app and then add them in to Instagram, I'm all over it again.

I love the social aspect of Instagram, getting to see other's photos out and about, what they're doing that day, or where they're traveling. Here's a shot I took on top of a big big hill in San Francisco, and a chair in J.Crew Westfield Center that I'm just crazy about, and a pic from our trip to Seattle.

THIS YEAR, I RESOLVE TO...

First on my list this year? Tackling my workspace and getting things organized up in here. With tax receipts neatly filed, important documents labeled for easy retrieval, and some cheery new desk supplies, this year's looking better already.

FESTIVE DETAILS

December 6, 2011

Okay, I confess....my favorite part of gift giving is actually in the packaging. I live for the moment each year when stores put out their paper, ribbons, and bows. I might have a bit too much of it in our hallway closet. But it's gorgeous! What's not to love about the endless combinations and beautiful creations you can make with paper and ribbon? Here are my favorite picks, including some pre-printed gift boxes that look "wrapped" for my male readers that might be, ahem, wrapping challenged.

Ever wished you could tie the perfect bow? Here's a great step by step tutorial. And don't forget to turn on the festive tunes while you're wrapping the gifts!
